REVIEW: Unearthed + Undying by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner.

Unearthed:

Unearthed is the next book by two brilliant authors also known as Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. This book tells the tale of two adventurers known as Jules Addison and Amelia Radcliffe. This book is set in a world where earth intercepts a message from a planet called Gaia. They hope and think that the race of Gaia, also known as the Undying, would have the technology to help save the earth from what us humans have done to it. Global warming etc. You get the point. Amelia Radcliffe is what is known as a scavenger. She steals artifacts and sells them on the black market; so when she is smuggled on the planet Gaia, she must do what she always does, steal things. And then she meets Jules Addison; A scholar on everything to do with Gaia and the undying. They must decode the ancient races messages to help them understand the culture that was on Gaia and to find and loot the place (as according to Amelia) but of course things don’t go to plan. They get kidnapped and found by a group of looters that want to go after it all themselves. The story just takes off from there. They feel like they are destined to be there and to find all of these clues. The twists of this story truly had me in awe. Like when it all clicked in to place and everything, it really was an oh shit moment. Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner do it again and make me want to laugh and cry all at the same time. 4 out of 5 stars.

Undying:

This book follows right in on from it’s predecessor, Unearthed. In Unearthed we meet Jules and Mia as they are on Gaia and searching for some answers about the race they have called ‘the undying’. But it turns out these undying were just laying in wait, and waiting for some humans to come to Gaia to rescue them. But they are not friendly, so in this novel, Mia and Jules must hide on the undying ship so that they can be transported away back to their home; earth. But once there; nobody believes that these ‘undying’ are actually trying to take over the world. They look exactly like humans, but with just a weird way about them. Jules and Mia are taken in by police and asked what happened. The international alliance do not believe them when they say that there is a crisis and the world is being invaded by the undying. So Mia and Jules must escape, but they can only do that with the help of the undying. They all escape and no it’s a race against the clock to stop the undying invading earth and save the people that they love.

Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner wrote another flawless book and I have sincerely loved this journey that they have taken us on. Jules and Mia are truly cute and are such adorable couple. When they are on Gaia, it’s just the two of them, despite all of the challenges that did occur, they were alone. But when coming to earth, they realize that their relationship might not last in the real world. They come from two different backgrounds. Jules, a wealthy and privately educated family and Mia, from a poor family where she has to work to save her sister from being in debt just because she was born. There was no way that this relationship was going to work past the current situation but they promise each other that they would try, no matter what the outcome of the chaos.

My favourite things about this novel is the realization of who the undying are and were. They mean so much to this novel and I love the way that is revealed that they are exactly who they say. They are humans. The twist behind the actual reveal, I will not say because of spoilers but honestly, I was astounded by the reveal. Simply speechless. In addition to this, I loved the reunions between Jules and his Dad and Mia and her sister Evie. Those reunions made my heart burst.

4 out of 5 stars.
